Autothority Performance Engineering was born from Autothority Inc., the premier independent Porsche performance and repair facility in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. Autothority Inc. was formed in 1975 by ex-patent attorney and long time racecar enthusiast Al Collins, who decided to turn his hobby into his livelihood. Minh Nguyen, a young entrepreneur, ex-Autothority Inc. employee, and future CEO of Autothority Pitstop; opened up Porscha Pitstop in 1993. With the ability and mindset to stay focus on the tradition set by the previous owner; Minh acquired Autothority to form Autothority Pitstop, and kept the tradition alive.
The advent of electronic engine management in Porsche automobiles provided the spark that gave A.P.E. life. In the early 1980's, Porsche began using reprogrammed E-PROMS (chips as they are often called) in their race engines with surprising results/ After some preliminary viability studies with an industry renowned software engineer, it was realized that this new technology had much broader implications than originally anticipated.
Now utilizing state-of-the-art chassis dynamometers and data acquisition systems, the notion of proprietary engine tuning software has become reality. By taking advantage of margins built in to E-PROM software to accommodate engine and fuel variations, performance improvements are realized an average of 10% on otherwise unmodified vehicles. And because of the radically different fuel and timing requirements of modified engines, improvements well above 10% are seen. Performance E-PROM's have been designed and produced for virtually all Porsches and BMWs (using Bosch Motronic and
Siemens engine management systems) as well as Volkswagen, Audi, Ferrari, Maserati, Mercedes, Bentley, Aston Martin, and Lamborghinis.
In the past year and a half, we have expanded our software tuning applications as well as opened a new high end show room and retail facility. We continue to sell the finest tuning applications for European import applications. Our customers now have the opportunity to experience some of the finest technicians in the country installing their new performance products.
